National Federation of the Blind to Address United Nations Conference on
E-accessibility

Dr. Betsy Zaborowski to Stress Access to Web Sites

NEW YORK CITY (December 1, 2006): Dr. Betsy Zaborowski, executive director
of the National Federation of the Blind Jernigan Institute, the only
research and training institute for the blind run by the blind, will address
a conference on e-accessibility to be held at the headquarters of the United
Nations on December 4, 2006. The conference is part of the UN’s celebration
of the International Day of Disabled Persons, and is intended to bring
global attention to the accessibility of the World Wide Web and other
information technologies.

"Access to information and communication technologies creates opportunities
for all people, perhaps none more so than persons with disabilities," said
United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan in a statement.

Dr. Marc Maurer, President of the National Federation of the Blind, said:
“Access to the Internet and other information and communication technologies
is crucial to the success of blind people around the world in the
twenty-first century. We are pleased that the United Nations is engaged in
the critical discussion of how to make the World Wide Web more accessible to
the blind.”

Dr. Zaborowski will explain and demonstrate for the conference the
difficulties experienced by a blind person using adaptive technology when
Web sites are not accessible. The conference will take place in Conference
Room 4 of the United Nations Headquarters in New York City, from 1:15 to
2:45 p.m. on Monday, December 4.
