STATE OF IOWA

TRANSITION TEACHER


The Iowa Department for the Blind is recruiting applicants for the following 
temporary summer position:



Services Specialist for the Blind 1/Transition Teacher


Using the structured-discovery approach to learning and the IDB's positive 
philosophy of blindness, teach transition-age blind youth the alternative 
techniques of blindness in the areas of Home and Personal management, Cane 
Travel, Communications, and other subjects related to summer transition 
programming.

          -Follow course curricula as developed by the transition team

          -Individualize instruction as necessary

-Implement both structure and discovery components of the 
structured-discovery approach in teaching technique used

-Implement IDB philosophy of blindness in provision of both instruction and 
blindness counseling

-Communicate continuously with supervisors and colleagues



Monitor and chaperone program participants and their activities up to 
twenty-four hours a day.

-Learn emergency measures and instruct participants about safety issues

          -Be available for emergencies when on campus

-Be aware of student whereabouts and activities at all times while on duty

-Mingle with participants and focus on teaching during all activities, both 
on and off training premises

-Communicate any problems or potential problems with supervisors and 
colleagues



Evaluate effectiveness of transition programming and student progress.

-Provide regular input and feedback to transition team

-Monitor student progress

-Communicate problems to transition team

-Participate fully in staff training

-Attend staff meetings

-Write and submit reports on participants
