To please be conscious of the subject line of your postings. Having "Digest"
as subject line doesn't tell us the subject. Many thanks for your
consideration.

>Welcome to the first issue of Imagineering Our Future--the online
>newsletter of the National Federation of the Blind Jernigan
>Institute.
>
>The dictionary lists "imagineer" as a verb meaning to put creative
>ideas into practical use; to devise and use imaginative ideas or
>technologies. Imagineering--turning creative ideas and
>partnerships into practical research, education, technology, products, and
>services to help the world's blind achieve independence--is at

>
>The purpose of this new online newsletter is to deliver timely,
>dynamic content to our friends and supporters about the innovation,
>inspiration, and imagination being generated through our work in the
>Institute and throughout the National Federation of the
>Blind.
>
>As you know, the Jernigan Institute is more than a building
>located at the National Center for the Blind in Baltimore, Maryland;
>it is a revolution, a vehicle for building a future full of
>opportunities, and an expression of the imaginative hopes
>and dreams of the blind themselves.
>
>We plan to deliver Imagineering Our Future to you on a regular basis
>and hope you will let us know what content will be most
>meaningful to you as a friend, a member of the Federation family, or
>one of our treasured donors.

>You can help guide the future of this newsletter by sending your

hi folks
So that's why it takes me so long to read one digest. If mailman happens
to read this I would like instructions on how to recieve individual
postings. The general consensis is thats the most eficient way to read this
discussion group.
Graham, you mentioned you used an old typewriter and often had to start
over. The patience and dedication this would have required makes me
respect you and others who started way back when.
I would like to submit a topic for discussion.
What do you enjoy about your job that makes all the extra challenges
worth it?
This question is not so much for my labor market research study, but for
my own edification. What drives your passion to write and report?
If any of you who have offer to assist me has a preference for time to
interview, please let me know in this forum or on my personal Email.
grassroots31194 at yahoo.com
I also had a question for everett. You wrote previously that you have
written poems, articles, along with blogging. You seem to have an interest
in independent journalism. Are you currently attending school, or is it more
of a hobby? Do you intend to persue this career? I only ask because I
enjoy your postings.
Well, I've got to run. I only have computer access at the library and
it is about to close. Hopefully after completing my labor market research
study Voc rehab will be able to change my limited access.
     Look forward to your responses.
      Happy Writing!
    Ben

I like your postings and wanted to reply.

You asked us why we like journalism and are willing to engage in it
despite the challenges. First of all, any kind of job is a challenge;
it's just picking your poison, in my estimation. Second, it seems
every time I talk about jobs after retirement, all people ever
suggest is pubblic relations. Well, I love journalism because I am
not beholden to any "clients" who want me to do their (stupid)
bidding, no matter what. I am beholden to my newspaper, and it
consists of my readers and my colleagues, whom I love very much.

Also, it's a wonderful chance to meet some interesting people with
interesting convictions, and I don't have to agree or disagree with
or even like them! I just get to be there, everywhere. I know this
community much, much better than I would if I had some other job.

Ben, I'm also interested in this report you have to do. It seems like
it might help the people handing out the money to see the
determination and rationale of the people looking for help with
college. When I was in school in Michigan, I didn't have to
demonstrate my determination in such a way. Do you think it's a good
thing, or does it just suck up gobs and gobs of time and make it
hard to do your other work? I know of a young woman in Michigan who
wanted to study music, and was good at it, and they gave her a whole
bunch of blah-blah and concern over it until an advocate stood up for
her. Tell me your thoughts on this process. You may write to me at my
home e-mail, newswritter at juno.com (yes, there are two Ts.)

Cheryl

Ben,
I agree with what Cheryl said. Also for me, it is a matter of loving to
tell the story, to get it out there and know it might have some sort of
impact on the community.

I think it is summed up in several quotes I love about journalism:

"Tell the people the truth, and the country will be free."

--Abraham Lincoln

"Journalism can never be silent: that is its greatest virtue and its
greatest fault. It must speak, and speak immediately, while the echoes of
wonder, the claims of triumph and the signs of horror are still in the air."

--Henry Anatole Grunwald

Memory is the personal journalism of the soul.
Richard Schickel

I think those sum it up better than the words I would need to search my soul
deeply for to describe why I love journalism so much.

    Ben

Subject: [Journalists] Introduction/challenge facing blind journalists

Greetings From Phoenix!
My name is Ben Hoff. I am a 23 year old aspireing journalist Currently
enrolling at Phoenix college. Ever since middle school, I have had a
passionate interest in writing and reporting. Now, as an adult I can
invision nothing else as a career.
I was born with Glaucoma, and as a child had vary little sight. By age
15 I was total.
Following the progress of this forum over the passed 3 months has been
most interesting and informative. I was rather excited to learn that such a
forum exists.
I've been attempting to locate active blind Journalists to interview for
a crucial labor market research study I am conducting.
Like many of you, I have obtained the assistance of vocational
Rehabilatation to fund my education and technology. Prior to providing
funding, however, I am required to produce a report demonstrating how a
blind individual can maintain this occupation. I intend to proove that not
only can a blind individual report with accuracy and integrety, but do it
successfully.
    EXAMPLE?
An average journalist on the city desk of a local daily can expect to
perform three basic tasks.
  1. Taking police reports
  2. Interviewing witnesses
  3. Writing a comprehensive senopsis.
These are all duties I feel a competent visually impaired Journalist can
perform
What are the main challenges facing today's blind reporters?.
I would love to interview Cheryl Wade and other visually impaired folks
currently employed at a local daily.
Any knowledge and wisdom you wish to share will be invaluable.
Looking forward to becoming an active partisapent in this group.
   Thanks,
  Yours Truly
    Ben Hoff
