There are also a bunch of new cameras this year touting "face detection" auto-focusing. That system won't tell you where the faces are in terms of aiming the camera, but it will take care of under or over-exposure, blurriness, shadow, etc.

Well, what about asking someone else to shot the photo you want with you
in it? Tourists do it all the time. Why would someone laugh you to
scorn? What am I missing?

Oh, please, pray tell about the photography thing! Someone suggested at
my paper that I do some photography about my vacation in Taiwan, and so
I took a camera with me but everybody laughed me to scorn. I'd never had
any training, so the idea bombed, mostly because I didn't push it much.
So here I was, standing up to "photograph" a fancy assembly, hoping I
could point my lens way up high so I could get all the people in the
assembly. Had no clue about how the pictures turned out.
