[Journalists] What do you all think?

Another two cents:
The aspiring journalist who penned the personal commentary can learn a good lesson from the responses on this list. The responses ran the gamut from love to hate, plenty of opinions to be had. The young writer will find that reader responses will be similar as he continues to write for publication -- he'll have differing opinions from readers on everything he writes.
And it also illustrates that while discussion is always good, it doesn't really matter what anyone thinks of your writing. If you are proud of what you've written, and you believe in it, then run with it.
And the more discussion your writing creates, the more successful the piece is.
Over the years, I have written a number of humorous personal commentaries and I have always welcomed the calls and emails from readers whether they are calling to harangue me or thank me.

Dear Dave,
I wonder if it's more damaging to keep all our
struggles to ourselves? Shouldn't we be humans in
the world and fail and succeed just as often as
anyone else? Shouldn't we write about what is
important to us?
I was told at a meeting that we needed to have
them at a restaurant to show blind people out in
the world doing every day things. Just as Erma
Bombeck used humor when she wrote about being a
housewife, I can tell the story of a landlady
refusing to rent to me because the apartment had
stairs. I can choose to see it as humorous or
irritating or both.
I heard Dr. Phil say once "You can't go through
life with sweaty palms." I took that to mean,
quit worrying so much about what other people are
thinking. I'm here, I'm blind, get used to it.
