Dear Listers,
We all grapple with the line of where to work out
for ourselves how do to something and when to ask
for accommodation. We also have to have some
compassion for those who do not understand. That
is where prejudice comes from after all, mere
ignorance. I explain things to sighted people who
make an error about me.
I also try and laugh at myself for my own
foibles. I still tell the story of this tree that
wrestled me to the ground, and my friend's
walking into another tree and saying excuse me. I
don't think that makes us the butt of jokes, I
think it makes us normal humans experiencing the
world with our own POV.
I also find it is perfectly okay to get angry
when you are in the right. I got on a bus and
asked the driver to alert me to a street. He
sneered that he didn't have to call out the
stops. I shoved my card in his face and said,
"this says I have that right so tell me where the
bleeping street is." He didn't get angry, he
apologized. Every time I got on his bus after
that , he asked what stop.
I know not everyone learns as well as that bus
driver, I just refuse to let people keep their
opinions small. I say express the full range of
our emotions in the same way as anyone else. I
say laugh at that which is absurd and educate
those who are ignorant. Teach people how we wish
to be treated.
