[Journalists] Question re magazine submissions

I have! Early on when Slate & Style began running fiction contests, the
story that won the contest was also submitted to the Braille Monitor, which came
out with it shortly before we did, and made us feel ridiculous. Partly that
has to do with the fact we serve the same market, albeit a smaller portion of
it. So we now ask that articles, stories, etc. submitted to us not be
submitted elsewhere at the same time. We can't stop people from doing it, but as
they say, once bitten! It makes me feel very cautious about accepting a story
from someone who has done this without at least telling us what they were up
to.
