[Journalists] Question re magazine submissions

Hi Donna, and all,

I'm all about freelance writing, and my main goal has
been to be a magazine articles writer more than any
other avenue of writing. I've often been torn between
talking of such things here or on the Stylist list.
This list seems more focused towards journalism,
newspaper writing, of course. But the Stylist list all
too often seems full of more fiction writers than
anything else. I've always felt somewhere in-between.
Not a journalist, yet, though I may be one day once I
get back to school. And my fiction just plain sucks,
if you ask me (smile).

So pick your list. I don't think it matter too much
with the avenue of writing you've touched-on. It fits
into either list, to some degree, I feel.

Anyway, enough rambling. You're talking about
"simultaneous submissions." More often than not, a
market (and each publication is considered a "market")
will say specifically in their "Writer's Guidelines" if
they do or do not accept simultaneous submissions.
Many don't care, but ask that if someone else you've
submitted the same story to, accepts it, that you let
them know. So they can take it out of consideration, I
guess.

Go and Google the following string (including the
quotations):

"writer's guidelines" "simultaneous submissions"

You'll get an idea pretty quickly of what I'm talking
about. And the more market guidelines you read
through, the more you'll get used to seeing certain
phrases. Like, "we accept simultaneous submissions,"
or, "we do not accept..."

Your hubby is right, in my opinion. It's ludicrous to
say "don't submit elsewhere while..." Especially when
most pubs take months to get back to you. But it's the
supposedly accepted 'norm' in the industry. Even if it
does totally bite. ;-)

Hey, if you go to the Writers Resources page of my site
(www.everettgavel.com/writers_resources.html) you'll
find numerous databases for possible markets for your
articles. And much more that can help a writer get
paid for their work.

To Your Success!
Everett

uestion will not be off topic. I am a free lance

I am concerned about proper procedure for submitting
queries to magazines for nonfiction articles. I
thought many years ago that I heard or read that you
are to submit queries to only one magazine at a time.
My husband thinks this is rediculous, and the recent
books I've read on getting things published didn't
mention it. I would appreciate it if someone would let
me know.
