[Journalists] question (seeking advice)

I have a bit of a delehma that I was hoping those on this list could help me out with.
  I'm in college and interesting in writing "clips" for a local newspaper.  Problem is - my college is an hour away from home, and the newspaper (which is the local newspaper of the school that I go to),... their office is located a half hour to 45 minutes away from my college.  I don't have a car, nor any friends that live in the vicinity of where the newspaper is produced.  I hate to make excuses for myself and start saying "well I can't possibly do clips for that paper b/c it's too hard to get to"...  so...what should I do?
