[Journalists] Questions.

Hello Alan!

Sorry to take so long to get back to you.

First, it would be helpful to know if you want to pursue a career in print
or broadcast journalism.

You are in a pretty good market for both print and broadcasting in
Nebraska, my former home state.
Will you attend school in Lincoln or Omaha? Both cities have pretty good
daily papers.

The journalism schools can give you information on what types of internships
are available at media outlets.

I would also encourage you to contact the newspapers, along with radio and
tv stations in your area to find out about starting salaries.

As for the atmosphere of the workplace, I would say that has a lot to do
with the management, and the style of leadership.

I think you will find that newsrooms tend to have a combination of a
family-like and a competitive atmosphere.
Another thing to consider is that newspapers are fast becoming multi-media
outlets. ON most newspaper web sites, you will now encounter pod casts,
videos, audio clips from stories and slide shows.
Newspapers are competing head to head with tv stations to provide news
instantaneously, especially during morning and afternoon drive time.
We start early in the morning with stories about traffic accidents,
overnight crimes, etc. etc.
We of course don't ignore our print editions, but the Internet has
completely changed how we deliver the news.

The more versatile you are in your knowledge of the web and the latest
trends employed by news organizations, the better.

I am certain universities are focusing on this in their classes.

Having said that, there is no replacement for using good interviewing and
writing techniques.

I hope this helps you.

Sincerely,

Liz Campbell

Subject: [Journalists] Questions.

Hi everyone,
Here are my questions. Deal with them as you see fit. *SMILE*

1. What is the approximate starting salary for someone just graduating and
looking for a job?

2. What kind of hours can you expect to put in on the job on average?

3. Are there professional organizations or associations that should be
joined?

4. What kinds of internships are available at various media outlets?

5. Describe the typical expectations for someone at an entry level position
at a newspaper/magazine.

6. What are the typical "tools of the trade" for a reporter/magazine
writer?

7. What are the chances (opportunities) for advancement at a typical media
outlet?

8. Is freelance writing a viable alternative?

9. How important is teamwork to the job?

10. What is the work environment like? Is it like a family, or is it
competitive in nature, each man for himself, so to speak?

11. What is the rate of retention VS. the turnover rate there?
12. Are there trade publications that I should know about?
