Dear Arlene,
Try to think beyond the switchboard. Switchboards are for the most part ,
going away.
Try to think in broader terms and wider vistas.
Your next job may have nothing to do with switchboards.
You might be required to talk to people doing customer assistance, doing
marketing surveys, ordering inventory, making appointments, doing sales,
handling customer accounts.
Try to think out of the box remember, you won't have all of the answers in
the beginning of any job. You will learn the answers
as you do the job.
Keep your ear to the ground and pay attention to what other people are
saying about the company or job.
Small pieces of info can be valuable in helping you work your way into a
job.
When my boss is talking to anyone else in my ear shot, I listen too and this
gives me deeper insight to the workings of my company and makes me seem
smarter, when I talk to my boss, because I am so well informed or have
something helpful to say because I have heard something, thought about it,
and maybe have some answers ready to respond with if brought into the
situation.
My boss likely thinks I have her office bugged because I know things almost
as soon as she does.
When ask I usually have something constructive to say which impresses her,
but only because I have had time to think about it in advance. This has
increased her confidence in me and my judgment. That makes me a more
valuable employee.
Play to your strongest skills and talents. Learn how to minimum the things
your are weak in, but work to make them better.
Such things as your typing speed, telephone edicatt, the number of office
machines you can operate, anything that helps you work faster and do better
work.
Be early for work and don't be the first one out the door at night.
This helps to make you look dedicated.
Have a nice word and smile for everyone you see . Learn names, job titles
and job responsibilities for your fellow employees and ask them questions
about what they do there.
develop relationships with co-workers as they can make you look good or bad
at your job.
They will also be there to help you out when you need them if you are
likeable and helpful to them.
You can't have enough friends.
Get to know your bus driver or Para-transit drivers too. They will go out
of their way for passengers they like and treat them nice.
In short, just try to be a nice outgoing person who wants to work and brings
a great attitude and personality to work with them.a
Do this an a job just may find you.

Have a great Day!
