Subject: Here's Your Opportunity to Practice Online Networking in Your
Job Search
"Many of us need to rethink how we want to present ourselves with a
resume in the light of how human resources people and hiring managers
are using today's technology to decide who to interview for a job,"
writes Jim Hasse.
Hasse is senior content developer for The Associated Blind, Inc.'s
eSight Careers Network at http://www.eSight.org
He's also facilitator for eSight's upcoming course, "Online Networking
as a Job Search Tool."
"I've found that the resume I wrote for myself four years ago is, at
best, out-of-date and, worst of all, not relevant to what decision
makers need in today's job market," he says.
He urges those job seekers with lifelong or acquired disabilities who
are feeling the same way about their resumes to apply for one of the
seats eSight still has open for "Online Networking as a Job Search
Tool," an eight-week eLearning Program which runs from March 12, 2008 to
May 6, 2008.
The application deadline for the course is Friday, February 29.
Application details and the course's syllabus are available at
http://www.esight.org/view.cfm?x=1968
As the course's facilitator, Hasse offers personal coaching to develop
not only a resume but also to research companies, build contact lists,
develop an offering statement, create a JIST Card, create a personal
brand, develop an ePortfolio and hone networking skills.
"Those are the key tools you need today to get an interview for the job
that's right for you," Hasse points out.
One of the many resources this online class uses is a panel discussion
with Deb Dib, Megan Fitzgerald and Bernadette Martin -- all career
coaches and personal branding specialists.
Dib notes the trend toward one or two-page resumes (instead of three or
four). Resumes, she says, must:
1. Show the value and strategic impact of what
you've done on previous jobs.
2. Be tied to proof you cite in your portfolio
through case studies etc.
3. Lead off with your branding (offering) statement.
That kind of resume takes work and practice in what Dib calls "career
writing," says Hasse, a skill each eLearner practices during the "Online
Networking as a Job Search Tool" eLearning Program.
An audio tape of the panel discussion by Dib and the other panelists who
participate in "Branding Your Resume, Bio or CV: Trends and Tips" is
available at
http://www.esight.org/link.cfm?n=1329
Writes Jo, who completed eSight's "Online Networking as a Job Search
Tool" course last fall:
"To future eLearners: Take advantage of every opportunity you can in
this course -- to gain new skills and to interact with your classmates.
The course is challenging and well worth your energy and time."
The Associated Blind, Inc., a 70-year-old non-profit organization in New
