Resident Advisor/Canine Welfare Technician (Modified)
Reports to Director of Training/Canine Welfare Program Manager
Location: California campus
SUMMARY
This position alternates between fulfilling the duties of a Resident
Advisor (RA)
position and a Canine Welfare Technician (CWT) position on a
regularly defined schedule.
The Resident Advisor (RA) provides supplemental support to our
instructor team by
being present for students in a residential dormitory setting during
off-peak hours
of instruction, including overnight stays during the week. The RA
assists students
with instruction in basic dog care and handling, orientation, and
provides peer mentoring,
computer, and guide-related education. This position also coordinates
some class
events, guests and volunteer interactions, and handles other general duties.
The Canine Welfare Technician I (Modified) provides physical and
psychological care
to dogs (training, career change, boarding guides and puppies, and
retired guides)
that are being kenneled at our facilities. This entails feeding,
bathing and medicating
dogs; maintaining a clean kennel environment; occasional data entry;
and reception
duties related to arrival and release of dogs.
FUNCTIONS
Resident Advisor Functions:
Assist students on campus with general dog care and handling matters
that arise outside
of general or formal guide work. Manage any critical situations
requiring immediate
intervention. Verbally or electronically, report all noteworthy
incidents to instructors.
Orient students to the residence building and campus grounds and
provide theoretical
orientation to town routes via tactile or computer maps.
Facilitate evening extracurricular activities and guest speakers.
Educate students in the use of computer adaptive technologies (JAWS,
introductory
computer lessons, global positioning systems etc.).
Provide peer mentoring to students on issues affecting their
relationship with their
guide. Refer substantive matters or concerns to the appropriate staff.
Field phone calls from constituents and members of the public, and
relay them to
others as needed.
Canine Welfare Technician Functions:
Provide basic care of kenneled dogs, such as exercising,
transporting, weighing,
grooming, bathing, and medicating; report health or behavioral
changes. Prepare and
dispense dog food and maintain precise feeding records. Maintain a
sanitary kennel
environment.
Monitor and control single dogs in fenced exercise areas, and provide
them with stimulation
through personal interactions and/or devices, per GDB standards and
procedures.
Maintain good verbal and written communications with co-workers,
teammates, instructors,
and supervisor. Maintain written records on dog care and other duties
performed each
week. Participate in meetings, educational sessions, and other group forums.
Interact with the public and volunteers; assist with the intake and
release of dogs.
Conduct campus tours and provide general assistance on graduations.
Represent GDB
at special functions.
General Functions:
Adhere to our organization's safety policies and procedures, and
encourage others
to do the same. Promptly report incidents and accidents according to
campus procedures.
Undertake other miscellaneous assignments as needed.
REQUIREMENTS
Current or prior guide dog user preferred. Prior experience caring
for dogs in a
kennel or vet environment desirable, and evidence of ability to
handle a variety
of large breed dogs with varying strength and manageability.
Solid written and oral communication skills, and the ability to work
successfully
in a team environment.
Self-starter with the ability to lead others and work independently.
Able to perform basic Microsoft Office Suite tasks via JAWS or other
speech path.
Understanding of computer adaptive technologies and ability to read
Braille highly
desirable.
Able to lift up to 40 pounds.
Able to remain on one's feet, standing, or walking all day on cement.
Able to withstand up to 2 hours of repetitive bending, stooping,
kneeling, and squatting.
High school diploma or equivalent.
