Position Title:  Assistive Technology Specialist (Program Support

Location:  Access and Disability Services - Fort Steilacoom (Lakewood)

Position Type:  full-time (40 hours per week), 12 months per year,
classified civil service position

Job Duties:  Under the general direction of the Coordinator of Access &
Disability Services at Fort Steilacoom the Assistive Technology Program
Supervisor will have extensive involvement with students, staff, the
public and various agencies in carrying out assistive technology program
activities and will coordinate, schedule and monitor assistive
technology program activities to determine consistency with program
goals. Within the assistive technology program, the position will have
responsibility for:
* Directing assistive technology services for students with disabilities
and providing leadership and training to the Access & Disability
Services (ADS) team when planning for the use and evaluation of learning
technologies.
* In collaboration with the Coordinator, develop accommodation and
academic adjustment plans that offer access to instructional material,
course content and on-line resources to students with disabilities.
* Integrate assistive technology for persons with disabilities into
teaching and learning and provide campus-wide coordination and support
for access to computers and on-line resources.
* Assess and train qualified students on the use of assistive technology
equipment and programs; assist staff and faculty to implement
accommodation plan as they relate to use of assistive technology.
* Work closely with District ADS Coordinators to provide seamless
assistive technology services across the district and to administer
assistive technology policies, procedures and support.
* In collaboration with Institutional Technology, research, evaluate and
recommend new equipment, hardware and software with particular attention
to universal design concepts; recommend purchase as needed. Consult with
vendors and external partners in testing and developing new technology
and services.
* Assist in the preparation and delivery of workshops and orientations
to promote awareness of issues of providing access to students with
disabilities.

* Participate as a team member in the Academic Support Center (ASC).
Consult with faculty and colleagues, as needed, to provide assistive
technology services and/or make resources more accessible. Provide
cross-training with staff in the ASC.
* Manage current assistive technology lab, providing access to assistive
hardware and software.
* Hire, train, supervise and evaluate part-time and/or work study
employees in the assistive technology lab.
* Advise and assist students in planning a program of study designed to
achieve their academic goals; review eligibility for student admission
to a program; explain process for transcript evaluation and perform
unofficial evaluation of transfer credits.
* Explain course offerings and prerequisite requirements; interpret
institutional/departmental policies and degree and transfer
requirements.
* Provide on-going evaluation of student progress toward degree or
certificate completion based on current coursework and reviews of
transcripts from other institutions.
* Implement strategies that lead to improved retention rates.

Eligibility Requirements:
* Bachelor's degree in social/behavioral science, computer technology,
vocational rehabilitation, special education or closely related field.
* Certification in assistive technology OR substantial progress toward
certification with the ability to complete certification within one year
from date of hire.
* Knowledge of and the ability to administer high quality support
services to students with disabilities.
* Knowledge of and the ability to interpret and comply with the
Americans with Disabilities Act, Rehabilitation Act of 1973, applicable
state, local and federal laws and regulations, as well as universal
design concepts.
* Expertise and competence in understanding and articulating a broad
variety of disabilities (physical, mental, learning, psychological).
* Knowledge of student services in higher education and the skill and
ability to apply appropriate models of disabilities services.
* Knowledge of a wide variety of assistive technology used in education.
* Skill and ability in managing and developing professional and peer
staff.
* Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills and the
ability to communicate clearly and effectively with individuals and
groups.
* Computer skills to include proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel and
Access.
* Ability to stay current with regard to laws, trends, and initiatives
relating to individuals with disabilities.

Desired Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

* Master's degree in social/behavioral science, computer technology,
vocational rehabilitation, special education or closely related field.
* Experience working with persons with disabilities.
* Experience working in a community college or higher education
environment.

Salary:  $32,052 to $41,748 annually
