POSITION ABSTRACT - AMPUTEE COALITION OF AMERICA

THE SITUATION

The Amputee Coalition of America (ACA) ( <http://www.amputee-coalition.org/>
www.amputee-coalition.org) is a national, non-profit amputee organization
representing people who have experienced amputation or are born with limb
differences.

 

To further its goals and to enable amputees to achieve improved quality of
life, ACA provides a number of services, including: publications, advocacy,
the annual conference, the National Limb Loss Information Center, Promoting
Amputee Life Skills program, and the Youth Activities Program.

 

Because of the planned retirement of the incumbent, ACA wishes to recruit a
well-qualified person to serve as its President and Chief Executive Officer.
ACA is headquartered in Knoxville, but the President may reside any place
with quick access to Knoxville and Washington, D.C.

 

TITLE

President and Chief Executive Officer

 

COMPENSATION

Annual base salary, with potential bonus based on achievement of objectives.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the President and Chief Executive
Officer (President) has overall responsibility for providing the leadership
and management to advance ACA's mission and strategic goals. The President
is charged with promoting the Coalition through increased visibility and
expanded member, donor, government and corporate participation.  The
President is the principal spokesperson for the organization, and devotes a
major portion of his/her time to external representation responsibilities.

 

The President will travel extensively in carrying out the duties of the
position.

 

EDUCATION

Bachelor's degree in an appropriate field, with advanced education and
training highly desirable.

 

EXPERIENCE

Must have demonstrated success as the chief executive officer of a relevant
non-profit organization, including significant and sustained increases in
membership and funding.  Ideal experience would have been in a nationwide
organization with a healthcare-related mission, a broad membership base,
effective outreach programs, and a strong advocacy program.  Experience in
state and federal lobbying programs is essential. 

 

PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

The successful candidate must an effective leader of staff members and
volunteers, capable of inspiring others to work for the good of the amputee
community.  He/she must be an eloquent and persuasive verbal and written
communicator.  Commitment to the mission of ACA is essential.  Personal
experience with limb loss is not an essential requirement but, at a minimum,
the successful candidate must have a strong connection with limb loss or
other serious and long-lasting medical condition, perhaps with a family
member or close friend.
