It might be advantageous to check the chain of dispensing. Every type of pill has an NDC code; maybe there's a bar code or something that could be read or kept track of.

I have a student who has completed most of her credits toward a pharmacy
degree and will be doing clinical rotations at different pharmacies after
she has finished her center training. One of the responsibilities she will
have is making certain that prescriptions filled by the pharmacy technicians
contain the right pills. She can do some of this by shape and color, since
she has some remaining eyesight. However, there are many white pills that
look the same.
I know that pills have certain numbers and codes embossed into them. I've
been trying to think of a way she could read them, as they are very small.
It may be possible for her to use a CCTV on high magnification with the
light shut off and a separate light source shining from the side. That
would make a shadow in the embossed numbers, hopefully making them easier to
see. It's the same principle a sighted person uses to read interpoint
Braille.
Another idea I have is to see if a macro lens could be placed over the
camera lens in the Kurzweil-NFB Reader, again with the light source off to
the side. That might make it possible to use the reader as a sort of
microscope for small items, and it would not require that she use her
remaining vision.
Have any of you dealt with this issue, or something like it? Do any of you
know possible solutions to her dilemma? If so, I'd appreciate knowing of
them, and I imagine others would to. If you choose to reply directly to me,
my e-mail is ddavis at blindinc.org.
Thanks very much for any help you can offer.
