Michel,
You can also talk to Lloyd Rasmussen, who works for the Library of Congress
books for the blind program, and Curtis Willoughby, who can be reached
through the Colorado Center for the Blind as I think he is on their board.

Hello Michel:
When I was in college, there was no adaptive equipment except for the
Optacon, reel to reel recorder, cassette recorder, Perkins brailler and
typewriter. I graduated in June 1976, and the first commercial braille
embosser had just come on the market. It was a real struggle to compete when
I got my first job. Fortunately, the Oregon Commission for the Blind and my
employer Tektronix Inc. purchased a Triformation LED 120 braille embosser
and an Optacon. After some time, I was able to compete on terms of equality
with my sighted peers.
31 years later, the world is totally different. It is my view that a
Computer Science student or engineering student must have access to the
following:
1. Perkins brailler.
2. Notetaker such as a BrailleNote or laptop with braille display.
3. 80 cell braille display. You need the long line to read code.
4. Braille embosser.
5. CD player capable of playing RFB&D books.
6. Computer with all the usual trimmings. Note a GB of RAM should be
installed as screen readers are memory hogs.
7. K1000 software and good scanner.
8. Duxbury software.
9. JAWS or Window Eyes.
You will also need some good human readers. Pick students who have had the
courses you want to take. Check ahead of time with professors if a course
you intend to take uses special equipment. You will need to do research long
before you actually take the course. Hope this helps.
Regards,
Robert Jaquiss

Hello,
I am seeking advice from someone in this field. My question is what tools
did you use in college to get your degree. Can this degree be gotten by a
totally blind person. If no please explain why.
Thanks!
