ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW
The mission of the Disabled Students' Program (DSP) is to ensure that
students with disabilities have equal access to the academic environment on
the Berkeley Campus. The unit is located in the Division for Undergraduate
Education. TRIO Student Support Services, the Disabled Students' Residence
Program, Exam Proctoring Services, and Disability Access Services are also
components of DSP.
The Disability Access Services component provides consultation and
assistance to campus entities to promote and ensure campus access to
extracurricular/co-curricular activities to eligible individuals with
disabilities.
POSITION CONTROLS
The Disability Access Specialist reports to the Director and is expected to
independently perform the duties of the position with substantial judgment
and initiative consistent with DSP practices and department guidelines. The
incumbent is expected to follow all Berkeley campus- and University-wide,
policies, procedures, and regulations related to the programmatic access for
students with disabilities. The position works closely with the Academic
Compliance and Disability Standards office.
The incumbent is expected to keep abreast of all new changes and
developments in disability compliance in higher education as applicable to
the functions assigned.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (* Denotes Essential Functions)
The Disability Access Specialist is responsible for providing assistance to
students with disabilities who require accommodations to University
programs, services, and activities; and to campus entities that are
responsible for providing accommodations to students with disabilities.
Under the general direction of the Director:
60% - Coordination of Services *
o Responsible for overseeing the provision of access accommodations for
all extracurricular/ co-curricular requests for regularly enrolled students
with disabilities.
o Serve as main campus contact person for all extra
curricular/co-curricular access accommodation requests for regularly
enrolled students with disabilities.
o Coordinate accommodation requests with appropriate external referral
agencies and/or contractors regarding the provision of appropriate services.
Schedule disability-related accommodations for extracurricular/co-curricular
requests. As necessary, work in consultation with the DSP Director and the
Academic Compliance and Disability Standards Assistant Provost.
o Coordinates intra-campus Loop golf cart rides for students, staff and
faculty with disabilities
o Coordinates provision of accessible classroom furniture to general
and departmental classrooms
o Develop contacts with campus units and entities
o Serves as liaison to Classroom Management Coordinator
25% - Service Design, Evaluation & Outreach *
o Evaluate services provided for disability-related accommodations for
extra curricular/co-curricular activities.
o Develop, prepare educational materials, and make presentations to
campus entities about their legal responsibilities to provide access
accommodations to their programs, services, activities and events.
o Work collaboratively with staff and faculty in the provision of
effective access accommodations to students with disabilities for extra
curricular accommodation needs.
o Maintain a professional working relationship with consumers
(students, faculty, and staff).
o Arrange and facilitate focus groups with persons with mobility
impairments.
10% - Record keeping and Accounting *
o Maintain and update record keeping system of contacts, inquiries and
follow up.
5% - Other Duties *
o Perform other tasks or special projects as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
o Demonstrated knowledge and experience in a diverse array of disabilities
and appropriate disability-related accommodations.
o Familiarity with disability-related laws including applicable Berkeley
campus- and university-wide policies, procedures, and regulations for
accommodating people with disabilities.
o Demonstrated critical thinking and problem solving skills.
o Ability to work effectively with students with disabilities who have a
diverse array of disability related needs.
o Ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively with
others.
