I just spoke to Ian in the office of Deborah Wasserman Schultz. According
to Ian (and this is by no means my opinion) her committee is responsible for
a lot of security issues in and around Washington DC. Why a bill of this
nature is not a part of Health and Human Services is beyond me but I don't
run the government. He said that they were only able to allocate the 7.5
million instead of the 19 million for the next fiscal year so it does not
include the future of the program. The entire bill still has to be passed
by the Senate. Sometimes I wish that the Federal government would give me a
copy of the budget with a red crayon, there's a lot of pork in there that I
could get rid of in an eye blink. I guess we have to pound our Senators,
and I'll try my own two dysfunctional Senators but that is where it stands
right now. By the way, Ian said that he has talked to a lot of people from
our community. Judith Bron

> Urgent action is needed to respond to the House's Legislative Branch
> Subcommittee's proposed appropriations bill relating to the fiscal year
> 2008 budget
> request of the Library of Congress. As you all know the National Library
> Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS) has been working on

> plan to convert the Talking Books program to a digital format. The cost
> of this needed transition from analog cassette to digital technology is
> $76.4

> million
> for this project in the bill, which passed the subcommittee yesterday.
> The subcommittee also voted against an amendment raised by Congressman Ray
> LaHood
> of Illinois that sought to include full funding for the NLS upgrade. Not
