Hi Terra, and all,
While I get what you're saying, and to some degree I
feel the same way, here's an example of what you say
shouldn't matter. Let's take an employee who works for
a company that does lots to publicly show it's support
of a global economy, and supports other countries and
their peoples in trade. Many employees don't have
their companies best interests at heart. Many just
have "a job" to pay some bills. So this employee has a
personal blog where personal views are shared. Yet
personal views support the building of a wall along the
southern border of the USA, or speaks out about
desiring an "English-only" country, etc. Such views,
though common in the USA, in this case could be said to
be in contrast to the company's views. Some higher-ups
in the company who do care about the company's image,
might view this employees (or possible employee's)
publicly-shared views as detrimental to the company's
public image. So they'd either find a reason to get
rid of them, or simply bypass them in the hiring
process. Sounds like common-sense, or at least, just
"good business," to me.
That is just one simple and likely circumstance I can
think of. I bet we could list 20 more in a few minutes
time if we wanted to.
While, perhaps, it shouldn't matter, public image does
matter--to business. Another example is me. I speak
out in e-mails about God now and then. I have some
poetry online that shows my love of, and allegiance
to, Christ. I may lose out on opportunities and
relationships because of that. That's life. I've made
my choice, and will deal with what may come. I may
never be aware of what I "miss out" on. Some editors,
no doubt, will view my various online writing, such as
this e-mail for instance, and choose to not work with
an outspoken lover of Jesus, you know? But that's
okay. I've decided, or realized, that God will let me
have out of life what He knows is best. And I've come
to realize that anyone who is that outspoken against
God that they bypass me because of it, well, I probably
don't want to have dealings with them anyway. (smile)
But anymore, I try not to rant and rave online as I did
a few times in past years. I try to write only that
which I believe in and stand-by. So must all who blog
and share their beliefs and POVs, openly. The Internet
is not a private forum, no matter what some seem to
think. What you say, can hurt you. That's why I
cringe every time some naive e-mailer shares all of
their personal contact info in a message. Because
it's then made public, and may come back to haunt them.
Regards,
Everett
