Based upon this comment, I believe that there is a serious
misunderstanding of the Nebraska Orientation Center, and the quality of
training that we provide to both our clients, and our employees. Every
employee is required to complete 600 hours of full emersion training in
the Orientation Center. During this training, instructors must develop
mastery over the non-visual alternatives, and more than this, a clearly
positive philosophy of blindness. Those that do not meet these stringent
expectations are given additional training until they either meet the
requirements, or are dismissed from their positions. Also, they are
subject to a six month period of probation, which can be extended if
appropriate. Our employees receive training that is among the highest
quality in the field of blindness rehabilitation in the United States.
After all, the term "Structured Discovery" was coined here in Nebraska.

I don't know about you, but I'm a bit confused by this post. The subject
line says "communications instructor, however the description calls for
anything
but a degree in rehabilitation teaching or orientation and mobility, or
vocational counseling and yet this person is expected to be able to
participate
in all aspects of training especially those trained as rehabilitation
teachers would be teaching. Seems to me the future students would be
getting the
shaft as far as training is concerned if they received training from the
person who had gotten this job, simply because the credentials required
wouldn't
necessarily insure that the instructor had training in the necessary
areas in order to conduct the training. I have seen in other states that
individuals
were hired without necessary training in use of Braille skills but were
expected to function as a rehabilitation teacher. Seems to me it's time
for blind
folks to stand up and be counted when it comes to expecting quality
instructors and quality training of those instructors within the field
of blindness.
If you're not going to expect instructors to have been trained in the
skills of blindness then how can you expect them to teach the skills of
blindness.
Description:
Provides counseling with students about blindness and attitudes toward
blindness.
Works effectively as a member of the Orientation Center team and
participates in all of its functions.
Participates with students in educational, social and training
activities.
Provides appropriate vocational counseling to assist in career planning
and the transition from Orientation Center training.
Provides instruction to students in non-visual techniques for typing,
abacus, keyboarding, access to computers, instruction in software
applications, handwriting,
etc.
Requirements:
Bachelors degree in behavioral sciences or related areas with two years
of teaching experience, and a knowledge of blindness technology.
Masters degree preferred.
