[Jobs] braille transcribing or proof reading.

Vivian,
Thanks for the response. I am working on completing my NLS certification
for literary braille. All I have to do is finish my manuscript and mail it
off. I wanted to kind of get a head start on seeing what is out there or
see what the next steps are. I will be using Duxbury 10.6 for transcribing.
I am blind, so I will be transcribing stuff that can be scanned in, or that
is sent to me electronically, how does that work with textbooks? I don't
think I could do textbooks that have lots of graphics in them. I am using
Perky Duck for my manuscript. I have a 80 cell braille display, Romeo 25
embosser, and a Perkin's braille writer. Thanks for your information.
Michael

We contract Braille transcribers to transcribe mostly textbooks, but they
must be literary certified and either have experience in transcribing
textbooks or have the NBA Textbook Formating certificate. I recommend you do
the following. If you have not done so already, join National Braille
Association (www.nationalbraille.org) for continuing Braille transcribing
education, technology, networking, etc. You should also find an experienced
CBT for a mentor to consult on questions about textbook transcription.
Beyond the NLS Literary certificate, you need to continue with the NBA
Braille Formats course to learn how to format textbooks because that is the
area of most demand for Braille transcribers. This is a certificate course.
Once you are certified, you should add your contact information to the
Accessible Media Producers (AMP) database at www.aph.org. What software are
you using to transcribe now?

Anyone have tips or suggestions on getting started in braille transcribing
and/or braille proof reading? Or companies that contract out work? I am
almost done with my braille transcribing certification, I just need to
finish the final project.
Thanks,
Michael
