[Jobs] Industries for the Blind

Interesting discussion. It makes me think the Employment Committee needs to
meet and consider the following:

1. What is the purpose of the Jobs listserv? Is it a place for employers
to post job listings and jobseekers to seek jobs? Is it a forum for
discussion about employment-related issues? Are the two functions
compatible, or not?

2. Given the fact that we are bound by NFB policy, is it responsible
behavior for us to list jobs from organizations that oppose the NFB or
operate in disregard of its policies?

3. Who may post job openings on the Jobs listserv? Can employers post on
their own, or do they have to go through someone in order to do so, and if
so, who? Do we need to do a better job of encouraging them to post on it?

4. If there is a posting for an organization with which our state affiliate
or some of our list subscribers have had problems, do we or they have a
responsibility or not to let the list users know of those problems?

5. If an employer's job posting may be criticized by list subscribers, is
that likely to interfere with their willingness to post their positions in
the future? On the other hand, is it fair to tell subscribes that each job
posting is sacrosanct?

6. Given the fact that this is a wide open listserv, do we want to
discourage job seekers from posting their resumes on it, or providing
personal information on it? Do we simply want to warn them instead?

These are just ideas of questions for discussion by the committee. There
may be others we should ask it to consider, too.

Overall, I think this is a very interesting listserv, and I like the people
who subscribe to it. I am sure we should continue it, but I am equally sure
we need to do a better job of defining it for everyone.

David: I owe no confidentiality to anyone in that letter.
You speak of an employment relationship which I have none with the author.
That is a result of someone being foolish enough to send such a
communication via e-mail.

Michael, the chair of the employment committee is Buna Dahal. You can
email here at buna at interfold.com. A couple of things occur to me as I
read the postings on this agency. For us, if we post letters including
names of employees, we need to either change or delete the names.
Particularly if such individuals might receive disciplinary action, or
the information might effect their employment.

Secondly, I don't believe that we have abandoned sheltered shop workers,
or our commitment to getting a living wage and better working conditions
for workers. You may recall the minimum wage legislation we've been
sponsoring for years, as well as the reforms in social security. I am
dismayed, but not surprised at the attitudes expressed in the letter.
Industries programs frequently fail to live down to my expectations.

Finally about the employment committee. Over the last couple years, we
have concentrated on employment workshops at conventions. We used to
have meetings, which seemed to be mostly us talking to each other. That
being said, I'm sure that members are interested in working conditions
in sheltered shops. Another group, which would have more direct
knowledge and ability to address the problem is the Blind Industrial
Workers of America. I don't right now who our president is of that
division.
