[Jobs] What is this?

Guys,
It is ironic at best (and discriminatory at worst) when a general production
job in a workshop for the blind requires vision. Why doesn't one or more
of you write AIDB a letter complaining about this discriminatory job
requirement? I do that all the time when I see a non-transportation job
posting that requires a valid Minnesota driver's license. If we all do that,
some of these requirements will change.

Everett, I think you know I was not talking to you about being judgmental,
it was obvious as to who that was addressed.
You are right about what you have seen in this posting, however there is
nothing we can do about it from this list. We could fill up days of
meaningless debate and still the blind will get the same.
The industries for the blind employment has been around for more than 70
years and the empowerment of blind people has always been an issue. I have
fought it as much as I can, recently I took a some evidence to Jim Omvig who
is NFB representative on the committee that controls the contract to these
agencies, and he has done nothing. Baltimore has abandoned industries as
any type of advocacy priority. So you see filling up this list would do no
good.
Thank you and I agree with your perception..

Edwin,
While I don't at all believe I'm being "judgemental"
here, I will say in reply to you that in an industry
which I thought "employs the blind," yes it's slightly
annoying to read their statement:
"Must be able to perform tasks which require visual
alignment of product or visual inspection of product
conformance to standard."
Just seems like they'd have found a work-around for
such a need by now, if they cared to.
They say it's for jobs that require "shading" checks
and quality control. Fine. I'll let that one go,
though it seems telling. But then they say the
following, which I suppose should not surprise me:
"AIDB is sensitive to the needs of Blind or Visually
Impaired and Deaf or Hard of Hearing and will make
reasonable accommodations for qualified applicants and
employees that do not impose undue hardship and are not
essential functions of the job."
So, does that mean that for "essential functions" they
won't make accomodations, which I would like to take
as, 'figure out a way it can be done by someone who is
blind.'
Ah Well, Thanks for the Reminder,
Everett
