Eileen,

What is your profession? I am an instructor of English as a second
language with a master of arts in the field. Believe it or not, I was
told by an employer to go volunteer somewhere first to become better
known. I wanted to teach at a language institute
Near my home but could not get in at all. I fought it politely by even
writing to the president, but no luck. I was nicely told excuses such as
the school prefers to hire instructors with experience even though a
bachelors
Is all that is necessary for this particular center. I was also told the
administration prefers to hire faculty they have previously worked with
before. My work history has breaks in it as well until now. My counselor
at the Division of Blind Services got me into a work experience with a
gentleman who is starting his own assistive center for technology. I
think he's going to end up keeping me, but I'm not sure. Even if he told
me over and over again he would hire me, it would take me some time to
actually believe it because I just can't find work not even in call
centers because I'm overqualified I guess.

I have found it hard to address being out of work with employers. I
don't think they always understand. Last I worked until now was back in
2003. It would be interesting to see what advice others have on the list
about addressing being out of work.

I believe it would be a good resource for all. I would surely like this
information. I have been volunteering for the past five years, but I
know that future employers will question some breaks in my work history.

Thanks.

Eileen

I agree hit it head on. I feel comfortable with my response, but plan
to discuss this with one of my reference. thanks
