Hello,
I am totally blind and have had a very hard time finding work in ST
Petersburg, Florida as well as, where my mom lives in Sarasota in spite
the fact I have a masters degree in teaching English as a second
language to speakers of other countries. All the colleges I know of who
have an English language institute will not even allow me at least one
chance. When I called places for work, there were all kinds of needs.
The problem began after I was granted interviews and the blindness
became a known factor. All of a sudden, those English language teaching
departments had no needs. All the possible positions even substitute
ones amazingly disappeared. Interesting! Why was I even called in for
interviews if there were no needs? I was always nicely dressed, very
polite, and disclosed my blindness the day prior to an interview as not
to make anyone uneasy with me even though I don't bite. Yet, regardless
of my degree and personality, I was always told to go home and expect a
call sometime soon. Calls that really never came!
I fought for myself as much as I knew now by going as far as to write
the president of the college where I really wanted to work the most but
was politely told in very general terms that the school prefers to hire
staff with previous experience and whom they already know. I would love
to get in touch
With ABC news but have not had luck with the website my blind services
counselor forwarded me. I see everyone else on this list is having a
difficult time as well. I would love to speak out especially since I
told the employers for whom I interviewed that the division of blind
services would purchase any equipment I would need. Not only this, for
the school where I really wanted to work, all that was required to teach
was a Bachelors degree. Come on now! Of course I qualify!
I feel very angry and frustrated.
Fortunately for me, God heard my prayers, and I got hired to work for a
totally blind gentleman who is starting hos own center for assistive
technology. I'm so happy there! I love it!
Anyhow, if anyone has any additional information about ABC, please feel
free to let me know.
Sincerely,
Anastasia Charalambakos

I'm resending this because for some strange reason it
showed up in a strange format on the list. Not sure
why, it might again...but am resending. Hopefully
it's readable.
....
Okay, I was very interested in contacting ABC news,
but the link in the original e-mail is dead. I then
called ABC news and was forwarded numerous times from
New York to California, and not one person knew
anything about this possible story.
Does anyone know if this was legitimate to begin with?
