Dear Jeanne,

Welcome to the list, there are other NFB lists where you may find more pros
to talk to .

I have RP also and have been legally blind since the age of 16.
Lucky for me that no one ever got around to telling me that fact until I was
20. I was working as a Fireman/Para-medic at the time and driving too.
I won a couple of scholarships, which helped get me through college and
allowed me to work as a Nuclear/Aerospace Materials Engineer.
While in college I worked for Lockheed Space and Missiles, Lunar Rover Labs
in Sunnyvale California, building and testing the Lunar Rover vehicles that
went to the Moon in '71-72.
I also worked as a systems engineer on the F-117 Stealth Fighter Program.
This was still back in the days when we used slide rules and not computers
to help us with the math.
I left Lockheed and worked for a year for the Stanford Research Institute
and Linear Accelerator doing sub atomic particle research.
I left there to go to work for General Electric Nuclear Energy Division in
San Jose California.
I even certified welders for GE and did materials testing, destructive and
non-destructive.
I just learned to do things my own way, even making and developing my own
sets of tools and aides as needed.

I met my wife, got married, had 2 kids and moved to Florida in '79.
There I worked for a aviation Hydraulics business, where I headed my own
department designing and building test stands and equipment to test fuel
controls, A.P.U's, pumps and motors that go on all kinds of aircraft.
I had to leave the job , some years later, after my vision got so bad that I
could no longer drive at all and Public transportation just did not exist to
the level that I could use it to get to work.
That was when, after going on SSDI, that I decided to do something about the
transit problem.
I became a transit advocate.
Now, after 19 years, I went back to work for a transit company called MV
Transit.
I am the Consumer advocate. I work on consumer complaints, agency problems,
Public outreach about the services, organize the local seniors and disable
so that they have a voice in their own system and promote legislative action
on the behalf of these groups.
Now you know something about me. I hope that we will have many exchanges in
the future. You might check out the NFB-Talk list and others.
Have a nice day.
