Good afternoon again Leisa and listers,
Another task GDB's Kennel Technicians must perform is monitoring puppies
during birth and whelping. I understand this is currently done using a CC
T.V. to watch what is going on between the pups and their mothers to be sure
everything is all right. The perception by some seems to be that this
activity can only be done with vision.
The human ear comes as standard equipment on the vast majority of humans in
this World and in the majority of cases works well for performing such tasks
as monitoring puppies. I know because that's how we did it when we owned the
kennel in Middleborrough. If something didn't sound right between the dam
and the pups dad, mom, or I would check it out to determine what the problem
was and to intervene if necessary. The dams were no worse off for this
method of checking upon their activities. Why couldn't microphones be
installed in the whelping area and speakers placed at the monitoring station
to allow both blind and sighted kennel staff to, "Listen in " to what's
going on in the birthing and whelping areas. If organizations like the
National Zoo monitor their animals both visually and by an auditory means
perhaps our guide dog schools could reap the benefits of this method of
monitoring pups during delivery and whelping.
I should also note that Steve Irwin, (The Crocodile Hunter) more often
than not monitored the
activities of the animals at Australia Zoo by, "Listening" to what was going
on during the day, and especially at night. If he woke up in the middle of
the night and heard something out of the ordinary he and/or Terry went to
see what the problem was, and to take corrective action if necessary. And
these folks were/are sighted.

Hello:
Being curious, I did a quick Google search with the terms usb and
scale. Here is a site that looks interesting. They have a large! variety
of
scales.
http://balance.balances.com
A link for a specific scale that weighs 150 pounds is:
http://balance.balances.com/scales/501
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Robert Jaquiss
