POSITION: Resident Attendant
REPORTS TO: Director of Training

OVERALL SUMMARY: The Resident Attendant (RA) provides supplemental support
to our instructor team by being present for students in a residential
dormitory
setting during off-peak hours of instruction, including overnight stays
during the week. The RA assists students with instruction in basic dog care
and
handling, orientation, and also provides peer mentoring, computer and
guide-related education. This position also coordinates some class events,
guests
and volunteer interactions, and handles other general duties.
POSITION FUNCTIONS:

. Assist students on campus with general dog care and handling matters that
arise outside of general or formal guide work . Manage any critical
situations
requiring immediate intervention. Verbally or electronically report all
noteworthy incidents to instructors.
. Orient students to the residence building and campus grounds and provide
theoretical orientation to town routes via tactile or computer maps.
. Facilitate evening and weekend group or extracurricular activities, guest
speakers, and volunteer interactions with students.
. Educate students in the use of computer adaptive technologies (JAWS,
introductory computer lessons, global positioning systems etc.).
. Provide peer mentoring to students on issues affecting their relationship
with their guide. Refer substantive matters or concerns to the appropriate
staff.
. Field phone calls from constituents and members of the public, and relay
them to others as needed.
. Work with agencies that serve the blind community to promote mutually
beneficial relationships.
. Adhere to our organization's safety policies and procedures, and encourage
others to do the same. Promptly report incidents and accidents according to
campus procedures.
. Represent GDB at special functions, and undertake other duties assigned.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
List of 7 items
. Prior experience caring for and handling dogs. Current or prior guide dog
user preferred.
. Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
. Self starter with the ability to lead others and work independently.
. Able to perform basic word processing and database tasks via JAWS or other
speech path.
. Understanding of computer adaptive technologies highly desirable.
. Able to adhere to GDB's dog handling and management etiquette, and to
handle a variety of large breed dogs with varying strength and manageability
on
a limited basis.
. High school diploma or equivalent.

POSITION SPECIFICATIONS
List of 3 items
. Work hours are 6am-9am and 5pm-10pm, Monday-Friday. Breakfast and dinners
provided.
. This position is required to stay overnight in the Dormitory during the
week.
. This fulltime, non-exempt, Grade 6 position is expected to pay $17.25/hr
(San Rafael) or $15.46/hr (Oregon).
