Subject: [blindlaw] ABA Commission on Mental & Physical Disability
Lawmentoring program
Blindlaw listers:
The American Bar Association Commission on Mental and Physical
Disability Law has a mentoring program that includes trying to match
mentors and mentees with similar disabilities. The Word document for
becoming a mentor is attached and includes information about where to
e-mail the completed form. Below is information about the Commission
itself.
The mentoring program may be a good outreach tool for the National
Association of Blind Lawyers as many blind mentees may not have heard of
our organization.

The Commission was established in 1973 to focus on the advocacy needs of
persons with mental disabilities. After the passage of the Americans
with Disabilities Act of 1990, the Commission broadened its mission to
serve all persons with disabilities. In 1999, the ABA expanded its
policy known as Goal IX "to promote full and equal participation in the
legal profession by minorities, women and lawyers with disabilities" in
ABA leadership positions. The Commission's activities include a mentor
program for law students with disabilities, roundtable programs for law
students and lawyers with disabilities, diversity programs, and an
annual disability rights award ceremony and reception at the ABA Annual
Meeting.
The Commission's publications include the Mental & Physical Disability
Law Digest, which provides concise, expert explanation of the law in 22
subject areas with citations and references, and the Mental & Physical
Disability Law Reporter, a bimonthly publication that provides timely
summaries of reported legal developments in 22 subject areas 6 times a
year, as well as various handbooks on disability law. For more
information about the Commission and its activities and publications,
visit our website at www.abanet.org/disability.
