Dear Susan,

The NFB does have many divisions and includes one for Medical
transcriptionist and I think that there is one for Health care workers.
When seeking to gain re-employment, do not wait for someone to find you a
job. It is unlikely to happen that way. You must find it for yourself.
I would advise that you get what ever rehab training you can as soon as you
can, so that you have the skills to help you compensate for the vision loss.
Think long term here and not just about what you need this minute.
By that I mean, research what ever has caused your blindness and weigh what
will be it's long term effects on you.
You do not want to spend time training now and have to come back for more in
5 or even 10 years for more because you did not learn all of the right
skills the first time.
The NFB has 3 really good training centers, where if you go through them, I
have every confidence that you will never need to go anywhere else the rest
of your life.
Once you have the training and skills, you will be better able to find and
keep that job you are suited for and want.
It is kind of like driving on a mountain road. You can not see what is
coming until you get closer to the curve and can peer around the turn.
You have a good bunch of well adjusted blind people here to ask questions
of, so don't hesitate to ask them.
I am back to work myself now in a job that I would never have thought of a
few years ago. But I like it and it gives me the freedom to make it up or
change it as I go.

I am a former Para-medic and fireman, who was working on going to medical
school and college when I found out I was legally blind.
I then had to change all of my goals. I did it, but I did not face my
blindness, which, as I found out, would and did get worst with age.
I hid from it and hid it from others until I could not hide it because it
was too profound.
Lucky for me that I ran into the NFB and it's members set me straight and
provided me with good positive role models of what a well trained and
competent blind person could be and do.
They are the reason I am back working today.
I wish the same for you too.
If you want to talk, off list, my e-mail address is drevans at bellsouth.net .
