TITLE: Adult
Educator
PROGRAM: Aging and
Adult Programs
EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Exempt
REPORTS TO: Director of
Aging and Adult Programs
I. JOB SUMMARY:
The Aging and Adult Programs Adult Educator has primary responsibility
for overseeing an array of educational, recreational, social and
volunteer opportunities offered to Jewish adults aged 50 and above
through the Endless Opportunities Program of Jewish Family Service.
These programs and services are offered in conjunction with synagogues
and other Jewish organizations although programs are open to all Jewish
people in the Seattle area.
The Adult Educator is responsible for planning programs (in conjunction
with the advisory committees); recruiting volunteers to help organize
and facilitate events; recruiting luncheon and discussion group
speakers; arranging transportation and tickets for "field trips";
arranging space and refreshments as appropriate; publishing a quarterly
events calendar and publicizing events in conjunction with the JFS
Development and Marketing Department; and maintaining the mailing list
and attendance record for participants in the JFS Raiser's Edge
database.
This position will work with other members of Aging and Adult Programs
staff, members of the Development and Marketing and Jewish Family Life
Education departments of JFS, staff of partner and affiliate
organizations, members of advisory committees and other members of the
Jewish community who might benefit from the program.
II. EQUIPMENT AND JOB LOCATION:
The Aging and Adult Programs Adult Educator maintains his or her primary
office in the Jessie Danz Building of Jewish Family Service and performs
the majority of his or her work at a desk. He or she is also responsible
for limited operations conducted at local synagogues and other communal
organizations that are partners in Endless Opportunities. The Adult
Educator is expected to be familiar with word processing and spreadsheet
programs, to operate standard office equipment (personal computers,
printers, copiers and fax machines) and to drive vans or other vehicles
owned by the agency.
III. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS/MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
The responsibilities of the Adult Educator include, but are not limited
to, the following tasks-which are deemed to be essential job functions:
. Develop ideas for Endless Opportunities programming in
conjunction with advisory committees and the Director of Aging and Adult
Programs.
. Provide staff support to advisory committees, in conjunction
with the Director of Aging and Adult Programs, and seek the approval and
involvement of program participants in selecting and scheduling events.
. Encourage program participants to direct Endless Opportunities
and implement events while providing coordination, guidance and support.
. Work closely with synagogue and partner organization staff to
ensure the availability of facilities and to avoid conflicts with other
events.
. Draft quarterly catalogues, event flyers and other publicity
and work with the JFS Development and Marketing Department to create
final copy for all advertising and published materials.
. Meet on a regularly scheduled basis with the Director of Aging
and Adult Programs to report on program activities and participant
feedback and to receive supervision in all matters affecting Endless
Opportunities.
. Survey program participants on a regular basis concerning their
satisfaction with speakers and events.
. Record and monitor program expenses and contributions and
report them to the Director of Aging and Adult Programs.
. Act as a spokesman for Endless Opportunities (in conjunction with
the Director of Aging and Adult Programs) to increase community
awareness of the program and to encourage participation from affiliated
and unaffiliated Jews throughout the community.
. Maintain copies of all program advertisements and publicity,
schedules and correspondence.
. Familiarize him or herself with other organizations and programs
that provide educational and social opportunities for mature Jewish
adults and to coordinate efforts whenever possible.
IV. ADDITIONAL EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED
In addition to the essential job functions described above, the Director
of Aging and Adult Programs may perform a number of other tasks from
time to time, including-but not limited to-the following:
. Prepare written or verbal reports on Endless Opportunities,
from time to time, as requested by the Director of Aging and Adult
Programs.
. Maintain ongoing communication with JFLE in order to coordinate
calendars and ensure that programming is complementary.
V. WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
. Reports directly to the Director of Aging and Adult Programs
and acts as an involved member of the agency and department,
participating in team and all staff meetings and other events as
requested.
VI. QUALIFICATIONS:
* A master's degree in education or human services.
* A minimum of two years full-time experience in educational or
recreational programs for adults.
* Thorough knowledge of Jewish culture and values.
* At least one year's full-time experience working with older
adults preferred.
* A working knowledge of personal computers, including a
demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
* At the discretion of the agency, additional experience in
programming for older adults may be substituted for some of the above
requirements.
VII. WORK HOURS PER WEEK:
* 37.5 hours per week; This is a full-time professional position
exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA); some
evening and weekend work will be required.
