Even as Pace’s 2025 budget is stable, our regional system still faces a $730 million dollar “fiscal cliff” starting in 2026, as federal relief funds will be exhausted by that time. Public transit plays an essential role in the lives of millions of riders across the Chicagoland region and has the potential to reach even more people--but the system has been drastically underfunded for decades.
$730 million is needed by 2026 just to maintain existing service. However, even that amount does not allow for investments in additional fixed route frequency or the innovative services our communities need in this post-pandemic era. Pace is actively engaging with federal, state, and local leaders to collaborate on a solution to that looming funding crisis and to identify additional, sustainable funding so we can continue to innovate and create the world class transit system our region deserves.
Any person wishing to comment on the proposed budget may do so by attending a virtual or in-person public hearing, at Pace’s website <https://links-2.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fwww.pacebus.com%2Fpublic-hearing-feedback/1/0101019295ff94c0-575389fd-89c7-4ee7-8cc4-15dbc52f00e9-000000/16olT1JcAGvnPnuXAu-cQoXjvaFmnPpHasxatisvxBU=375> www.pacebus.com/public-hearing-feedback, by email to <mailto:public.hearings at pacebus.com> public.hearings at pacebus.com, by telephone to <https://links-2.govdelivery.com/CL0/tel:8473547943/1/0101019295ff94c0-575389fd-89c7-4ee7-8cc4-15dbc52f00e9-000000/H5gJxMtIpoMvx01EN77-MLzdVbyEhNi3dQ7Kz-bivO4=375> (847) 354-7943, or by mail to: Pace, Community Relations Department, 550 W.
