Lincoln Park Zoo strives to live up to our motto, "For Wildlife. For All."
We also hold to the disability justice mantra of "Nothing About Us Without
Us." This October, the zoo received a grant from the Institute for Museum
and Library Services (IMLS) to collaborate with individuals who identify as
disabled in the creation of exhibit elements that make visiting the zoo more
inclusive, equitable, and just for people with disabilities. We invite you
to join us in this work.   

 

Recently, we have developed new exhibit signs to tell the stories about the
zoo's conservation work and the animals in our care. We've also created
several installations that engage guests through tactile elements - stroking
a polar bear's fur, feeling the texture of a lion tongue, or exploring
enrichment items for primates. Our upcoming learning sessions will identify
more opportunities where an exhibit installation of some kind - a sign, a
tactile item, overhead audio content, an immersive play environment, etc. -
can enhance the visitor experience, particularly those who identify as
having a disability. In this project, we are not focusing on basic building
access (ramps, automatic doors, etc.) but rather the media we use to share
animal and conservation content.   

 

We appreciate your candor and creativity as you help us better engage all
visitors at Lincoln Park Zoo. 

 

We will kick off the project with learning sessions where you and other
members of disability communities can share your perspective on visiting the
zoo, including any challenges and ideas for improvement. After these
conversations, we will invite a smaller cohort to partner with us in the
creation of three new educational installations on zoo grounds.

*Each of these Learning Sessions will be live captioned and have ASL
interpreters.  

 

Learning Sessions focused on people who are blind or have low vision

*	Saturday, December 18, 2021 at 2-3pm 
*	Wednesday, January 5, 2022 at 3:30-4:30pm 
*	Tuesday, January 11, 2022 at 12-1pm  

 

Learning Sessions focused on people with physical disabilities or mobility
disabilities 

*	Wednesday, December 8, 2021 at 5:30-6:30pm
