Imagineering Our Future

Issue 1 February 6, 2008
Message from the Executive Director

Welcome to the first issue of Imagineering Our Future—the online newsletter
of the National Federation of the Blind Jernigan Institute.
The dictionary lists "imagineer" as a verb meaning to put creative ideas
into practical use; to devise and use imaginative ideas or technologies.
Imagineering—turning creative ideas and partnerships into practical research,
education, technologies, products, and services to help the world's blind achieve
independence—is at the heart of the work in the NFB Jernigan Institute.
The purpose of this new online newsletter is to deliver timely, dynamic
content to our friends and supporters about the innovation, inspiration, and
imagination being generated through our work in the Institute and throughout the
National Federation of the Blind.
As you know, the Jernigan Institute is more than a building located at the
National Center for the Blind in Baltimore, Maryland; it is a revolution, a
vehicle for building a future full of opportunities, and an expression of the
imaginative hopes and dreams of the blind themselves.
We plan to deliver Imagineering Our Future to you on a regular basis and
hope you will let us know what content will be most meaningful to you as a
friend, a member of the Federation family, or one of our treasured donors.
You can help guide the future of this newsletter by sending your thoughts
and ideas to: _JerniganInstitute at nfb.org_
(mailto:JerniganInstitute at nfb.org?subject=Reply%20to%20Imagineering%20ur%20Future%20Issue%201) . We especially
welcome your stories about how the work of the NFB Jernigan Institute has
impacted your life.
Thank you for supporting our Jernigan Institute and helping us build a fu
ture full of opportunities.

Mark Riccobono, Executive Director, NFB Jernigan Institute

The Members Hall of the Jernigan Institute was overflowing the night of
Sunday, January 27th, for a memorial celebration of the life and legacy of our
first Jernigan Institute executive director, Dr. Betsy Zaborowski. Colleagues,
friends, and members came to pay tribute to the formidable woman we
affectionately called "Dr. Z." The crowd was addressed by Maryland Governor Martin
O'Malley and Senator Barbara Mikulski and other speakers from around the
