[Iabs-talk] Bosses of Blind People

Connie, this is an interesting question which has been the subject of considerable research. Interestinly, gvt agencies score lower and for profit high producers score higher on the "praise meter." I have been pretty fortunate to have worked for people who offered praise in a variety of ways, the most satisfying being "raising the bar" even higher. That said, it's always encouraging to get a pat on the back for a job well done. We could all use more.

I am curious to know, how many of your bosses give or have given you praise? And how many of you who are bosses give praise?
In my job we process requests of service providers who contract with the Department of Human Services. We are expected to process about 250 cases a day. One of the qualifiers for this job was that the employees must be disabled, with the majority being blind or visually impaired.
One of the women I work with is deaf, but sighted. She is an absolute whiz at processing. Two of us had done way over our quota the other day and were quite proud with ourselves. All our supervisor's boss could say to us was "Do you know how many _______ has done"? (We had been flooded with cases this past week and made a substantial dent in working them down.) That made me and another blind lady feel demoralized.
I have asked other people this same question. It is about 50% of bosses who give praise and 50% who give criticism and are negative.
Just curious.
