Hey Chicago Chapter:

Rick and I were sorry to miss the meeting today. I wanted to hear the session
on blind tricks. Rick's mom had a severe stroke on Labor Day. We rushed here
to Georgia to be with his sister and his mom during this difficult time. It is
so important for family to stick together in a crisis. I just thought I would
let you know why we couldn't make the meeting.

I only had to miss one class this past week that meets on campus on Tuesdays and
Thursdays, but I have one of the most understanding and accommodating teachers
in the world for that class, by the way the class is Jewelry Fabrication. I was
almost booted from the class because of my blindness. I fought a hard battle to
remain in the class. The college told me that I couldn't participate in this
class because they use a torch and they solder so the authorities felt a blind
person couldn't possibly use such implements. Rick of course came to my rescue
and offered to be my personal assistant and by law, each disabled student can
have one personal assistant in class at their own cost. Rick works cheap thank
heavens. He just sits there with me most of the time, but his being there
supposedly meets some safety requirements at the school. The final decision to
let me participate in the class frankly came one day before I was going to post
a plea for help on this list on how to pursue the matter.

My other courses this semester are terrific because they are all online, and
I've been able to keep up with them while Rick's Mom rests and slowly tries to
recuperate. She's making a tiny bit of progress. We're hoping for much more in
the very near future. Rick's mom is 95 and continues to work full time as the
administrative assistant to the Medical director at a hospital. What a woman.

Hey, speaking of school, I want to share some good news with everyone. I was
nominated and inducted into the Chi Upsilon Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa
International Honor Society last week. I was thrilled to receive such an honor.
I will be graduating from McHenry County College Suma Cum Laude in December of
2008 because of this induction. Yup, I'm pretty darn proud, especially since I
am the first blind student in the history of McHenry County College to receive
this honor. I thought it might be nice if everyone in Illinois NFB who was
responsible for choosing me as a finalist for a scholarship this year, knew they
had honored me for a good reason. I am so happy to be on not only McHenry
County College's Dean's List, and the Chi Upsilon Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa
International Honor Society, but also making the National Dean's list for two
years running on the four point oh honor roll.

I know that most of you don't know it, but I am back in school in middle age
trying to get my Masters' degree in Vocational Rehabilitation in an attempt to
get back into the working world. It's my passion to stand out as a successful,
middle-aged blind woman in the world. It's very important to me. Thanks for
letting me share this information.

On a final note, I read the post Kelly made regarding state reps who voted
against SB572. My rep Jack Franks is guilty as charged. I will be calling him
on Tuesday when we get home, to try to arrange a meeting with him to discuss his
decision. I will at least call his office and speak my mind about SB572,
telling him he should support this important third amendment.

Take care everyone, and see you soon.
