They do not charge your credit card for the deposit until the date of  
check-in, and the customer service person I spoke with said they allow you to  
cancel your reservation without a penalty as long as it's before 3 PM on  check-in 
date.
 
Therefore, it'd be a good idea to book a room at the Convention rate even  if 
you're not yet 100% sure you'll be attending.
