Christella,

    Every good group leader will expect everyone in their delegation to 
speak up while meeting with congressional staffers.  The Gathering In helps 
people understand the three or four issues we want our representatives to 
consider in the upcoming legislative session.  Even though packets are 
distributed to each delegation, the meeting helps clarify points of 
consideration that may arise  during your meetings.  Some staffers could 
care less what we have to tell them, but others ask pointed questions for 
which we should be prepared.  The Gathering In also provides an opportunity 
for organizational updates, such as the release of a new Kernel book, and 
plans for National Convention in Atlanta.  While the meeting would not be 
considered mandatory, it is one to which anyone serious about their DC 
experience should make a top priority to attend.  Anyway, it's not a silly 
question, and I hope this helped.
