Subject: Braille Mathematics Transcribing Software by Imperial College
Student

Mr. Orozco:

We are Window For the Blind, a group of year 3 students from the Electrical
and Electronic department of Imperial College. We are currently working on a
project concerning the Braille Mathematics Transcription System.

The overarching motivation for this project is to make Braille mathematics
more readily available to Braille readers and teachers of Braille. In doing
so, the worldwide library of easily available texts in Braille mathematics
will be expanded which may encourage more blind people to study in
mathematics or engineering fields.

We are developing a software based Braille mathematics transcription system,
which enables a sighted mathematician to enter and edit mathematics notation
from a QWERTY keyboard which is then displayed on screen in standard
mathematical notation. When the mathematician is satisfied that the
on-screen display is an accurate transcription of the original mathematics,
it is then automatically converted in to Braille and output onto a Braille
embosser. Our ultimate goal is for people to convert word documents into
Braille simply by importing them to our system.

Enclosed please find our questionnaire concerning some aspects of the
Braille transcription system. Your participation in this questionnaire would
be very helpful for the development of our transcription system which may
benefit many blind people in the future. We would appreciate if you want to
forward this questionnaire to any people who would like to be involved.
Thank you very much for your kind attention. We are looking forward to
hearing from you soon.

Best Regards,

Window For the Blind
