[GUI-Talk] More about the New Google News Layout

Hi David and all,

I didn't realize this new card design was going to happen until it took me
by surprise on July 13. I thought it was just a test because when I searched
one time on that day, the "articles on their own headings" layout was there,
but that night, the card layout came back. I started googling the design,
and then I read Google had actually announced it was making this new design
on Twitter. And even then, many commentators hated it. I am using Internet
Explorer 11 with JAWS 18 (not 2018.) Even now, many, many sighted people
hate the new card layout, too. The old layout is called the "cluster layout
because each topic had clusters of stories. With the cluster layout, you
could also see (as a sighted person, too), when the articles were published.
And you could go right past duplicates, too. Anyway, One sighted commentator
asked what if the card layout went into Google Search eventually? Which is
an excellent point. Which would be a huge problem for screen readers.

I would like to send another feedback report to Google tonight after I check
the news tab, if the card layout stays. I would like to make a suggestion
that Google make a setting in their "Settings" menu that lets you choose
what layout for news you want, cluster (headings style) or card (the new
way.) What do all of you think of this suggestion? Would it be feasible for
Google to do it?

Jen

Hi.

Here are my experiences using Google News as of a minute ago. I
performed a search using two different browsers, Firefox 68 and Chrome
76, using JAWS 2019 as my screen reader.

Currently, I am receiving the older interface with each article
beginning at its own heading. However, I have no doubt that your
experiences are true as site developers have the ability to roll out a
new experience to just a small percentage of users. I think that you are
correct to be concerned and that you should continue reporting your
experiences to Google, particularly publicly on social media such as
Twitter. It's also important to let them know why this newer experience
is problematic for users of screen readers. Thanks for alerting us.
