[gui-talk] Of Stupidity and Discovery

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the encouragement. For what company dou you work?

Regarding my "idiot" comment, I felt like one after I hit "maximize" and
realized I didn't need to spend an hour doing a repair! But on the flip
side, I made sure to pop my favorite CD in to keep me entertained ... I
couldn't stand hearing JAWS drone the progress bars on and on...

I do like exploring things, but when I was younger, I was too rash with it
(think deleting DLL files because you don't know what they are...)

So the key is, exploring safely. And you're right, I love new things. And
when something becomes accessible to me which has always been available to
sighted people, it's always fun to play with!

Jen,

Whatever you may be, you are most certainly not an idiot. I can tell by your
style of writing you are an intelligent and adventurous person, and the fact
you are unafraid to explore and try new things with your technology is proof
of that. None of us crawled out of the womb, knowing what we know. <smile>

While it technically shouldn't have been necessary to maximize the window in
order to view and edit your email, it never hurts to do so and, at times, it
can help with situations such as the one you found yourself to be in.

Enjoy your technology, and please be gentle with yourself. There's no such
thing as a stupid question.

Yesterday, I tried to reply to an e-mail, only to discover the top of my
message was gone! I could read starting from the bottom though. So I
automatically assumed it was an Office problem and spent about an hour
repairing it.

I went back in to Outlook after the repair and saw the problem still
existed. When I pressed Alt, the only item was a "system menu." There were
three items: "restore," "minimize" and "maximize." When I pressed Enter on
"maximize," my whole message magically became legible to JAWS again!

Up until then, I had never paid any attention to minimizing and maximizing
because I assumed they were just visual things. It turns out they do matter
because if something is not maximized, the whole thing isn't on the screen.

As for "discovery":

> I am an unapologetic and avid YouTube video watcher. I was exploring one
of the video pages when JAWS said "seek slider" when I was on the YouTube
video player. I turned "Forms" mode on, pressed the arrow keys ... and
started moving the video around! I now realize what my sighted friends mean
when they talk about, say, "the best part of this video is at 11:00."

Also, AWS tells me where the "skip ad" button is. This button will be
getting worn out very soon...
