Dave,

I am pretty impressed with the Becky email program.  it isn't free but isn't expensive and has a free upgrade policy.  it is apparently pretty big in Japan and 
there is a demo.  Perhaps my attitude isn't completely fair, but I am turned off by Thunderbird's tendency to constantly being updated.

One of the things I like about it is that it still displays a message in a window that has a cursor which means one doesn't have to depend upon JFW's 
virtual cursor or the Window-Eyes Browse buffer to read mail.  In most cases, these features work fine, but there just always seems to be some sort of 
interaction problem if one does a lot of email.  If anyone tries this program, there are a couple of options that need to be changed to make it work well with 
screen readers.  The downside is that it doesn't have as many automated ways to deal with address books and message importing from other email 
programs because it isn't as widely known.  While it seems to have pretty good filtering, I don't do a lot of that so can't say for certain..
