[gui-talk] is Webvisum no more?

I agree that the Federation and Council could well devote resources to this CAPTCHA issue. Solona might still be working if some money was available.

I'm not sure about you guys. But I think this could be some work that the NFB should put effort into. Yes, I believe in independence, and that every individual has a different concept of it. For me independence is being able to access every bit and byte of information that is available to me without placing a burden on someone else. This also goes for computer related and online information. And no, I'm not someone who just doesn't want to accept any kind of help from anyone nor am I am antisocial. I know that even sighted people among themselves ask for help that it is a human thing to do. But I think solving captchas on the web is something that can do independently as well as reconciling a bank statement, reading hardcopy mail, ETC. and I believe this issue about web application developers letting their tools for accessibility go is to be brought to the NFB and so they can do something about it. I don't know about you but I'd contact the access technology department team at the Braille and technology center as well as the national leaders about this problem that we're having and the patterns that we're noticing.

Cheers,
Humberto

I have to agree with Mike here. I actually find myself, because of some of the endeavors in which I am engaging, having to ask more frequently for assistance from friends, and, occasionally, readers, to solve Internet access challenges. I understand that some people do not have sighted friends or relatives who are willing to solve a CAPTCHA for them, which really doesn't involve much of an expenditure of time on the part of the volunteer, and that is a sad situation indeed.

Part of this discussion has also appeared to contain criticism of some of the people who have undertaken this kind of service as volunteers and have not been able to sustain the effort. The creator of Solona had the best will in the world, but simply could not Continue, despite efforts to recruit enough volunteers. I question the long-term viability of volunteer efforts in this area, but not because the volunteers are not well-intentioned.

I don't have a course of action that will please those who strive for the American myth of total pure independence.

Dean

I've stayed silent until now. However, the wording of your question disturbs me. You ask if the blind have lost the freedom to solve CAPTCHAs. The blind haven't ever *lacked* the freedom to solve CAPTCHAs. They just didn't have electronic tools to do so until Salona and Webvism. WE, the blind, could always use a reader if we felt it sufficiently important, just as we could and still must do so often with snailmail. To me, readers are a perfectly respectable tool to solve CAPTCHAs, if someone inconvenient at times. With the exception of PayPal, I choose not to patronize sites that use CAPTCHAs. That solves my problem for me. (grin)
