Greetings:

One is tempted to ponder the effect this interesting design will have on the
nonvisual user.  If Microsoft were to conduct as much research and put as
much thought into the nonvisual ways a touch screen keyboard is to be used,
then we, the blind, would really be moving forward in this area.  Alas, my
expectations here are not so high<sigh>.

The "Building Windows 8" blog from Microsoft continues to serve up
interesting information, and a heads-up for what we may be dealing with in
future versions of Windows.  The July 17 installment at

describes the research and decisions that went into Microsoft's
implementation of the on-screen keyboard for Windows 8 apps running in the
Metro mode on a touch screen.  How this will work with Narrator, JAWS or
Window-Eyes is anybody's guess, but it's interesting reading, anyway.
