On the other hand, the Search box in the Start Menu is great for running programs or finding random email messages etc.

Mike, thanks for the helpful hints on the run command in Windows 7. I have successfully used it to update JAWS on 2 pc'. There is a gthird one, but that's another story. I agree with your observation that it is more of a chore to find the file in the browse dialog. It seems more complicated than it really needs to be as pre-vista OS's demonstrate.

The run command is still there. Windows Key+R still works. It's just a bit more of a chore to ascertain the path of the download file.
