[gui-talk] Can't find Amazon mp3 downloaded album on myharddrive

hi Wayne,

I figured most of this, but you shed new light on it beyond what I'd thought
of. And as I have tried to say, I didn't mess up downloading and installing
the Amazon Downloader. I realize what you mean by Explorer bar, and I know
about alt n although I didn't know you had to switch to a fake mouse button
in order to bring up a menu there. I've never really had to bother with any
of this, at least not for a long time, for some reason . So I learned about
it and obviously forgot it. I suppose that was why I heard a peculiar Bing!
sound at some point during all these things I was doing? That's the signal
that you have to press alt N? Well, somehow I got through all of that
without a problem. The downloder installation, I mean.

I'll bet if I'd not changed the preferences and just allowed Amazon to put
its stuff where it wanted to, I could have done just what you did and then
find the stuff and copy it to a more convenient place to play it. Although I
don't get why you couldn't literally "move" those files or delete them. Must
be that they are sort of on your computer but they're actually linked to
where you got them from, and in fact Amazon could delete them if they wanted
to, the way they recently deleted some purchased books from customers'
Kindles for reasons not worth going into here. I sort of don't like this
sort of online thing because I'm almost sure you don't really own the files
you've bought, and I'll bet they're protected in some way from your sending
them to someone else, or whatever. it's a little too Big Brother for my
taste. then I'm thinking, well, I'm a customer of audible.com, with many of
their spoken books on my computer, but I know those files are protected in
some way, can't be played other than by the Audible reader, called Audible
manager, I guess, and maybe if they wanted to, they could get into my PC and
delete some of those books, just as Amazon's done with Kindle people. Oh,
well. Can't mess my mind up thinking about this too much, i guess.

Back to music: I have some music files on my machine, but they're mostly
either gotten from certain online sources that post stuff to SendSpace and
that other, more notorious (if you read the news) server based in
Switzerland, and those are completely mine once I've gotten them. The other
music files on my PC are ones I've ripped from my own CDs, so there's no one
involved in this but me. And if I really want something and it's in print,
so to speak, I'll just buy the CD at Amazon and then own the music, for
real.

Still, I want to solve this thing. It's only five bucks out of my pocket,
but this album isn't easily available on CD anymore and it just seemed like
a cool idea, so I went with the flow. Or tried to, anyway.

thanks for the moral support and the advice.

For what it's worth, the keystroke to get to the information bar in IE
is alt with N, then a right click of the JAWS mouse button will bring
up a context menu where you can choose to download/download all. I too
have not had any major problems when using the Amazon MP3 store,
except in the beginning when I had to get to the information bar or
when I had to manually start the download process. I've not changed
the default download location for the Amazon tracks, but rather have
gone into the specified folder and copied/moved the tracks to my music
area on my computer. I haven't done anything with the folders of the
artists and albums. Initially I tried to delete them, but after
awhile, didn't worry about this part. I hope you can get this resolved
Joel since Amazon is perhaps one of the few resources that lets you
get unprotected and unrestricted music from. Personally, I refuse to
use iTunes due to it's narcissistic nature, of only allowing certain
kinds of music to be played and only in their own system. Too
restrictive for me. Besides, you can't beat an accessible web
interface. I think the hardest thing of the Amazon store for me was
getting that initial download of the Amazon MP3 Downloader software on
my system. Once there though, it's been extremely easy, especially
when you set and turn on your one click settings on the Amazon site.
this way, once they're setup and your credit card information is
entered, you can just activate the buy track link, and everything
happens in the background.

Good luck,
Wayne
