thanks loads. this is a great explanation. I can't concentrate on changing 
my desktop's security stuff today because I've got to get ready to go 
computer shopping for a laptop with someone after lunch. But now I get the 
idea,much more clearly than before. Thanks.

If you decide to install Microsoft Security Essentials on your desktop,
there is no need to uninstall Windows Defender or SAS.  MSE automatically
disables Windows Defender, and you can still use SAS to run periodic scans,
since it will not interfere with MSE.  There is no learning curve with MSE;
just install it and let it run in the backround to detect viruses, spyware,
trojans, rootkits and other malware.  It updates its definitions
automatically, and alerts you when it detects a malware threat.  It does not
include a firewall,so you can continue to use whatever firewall you are
currently running. However,you must first uninstall Avast to avoid potential
conflicts.  In a recent test, MSE outscored Avast and AVG in detecting
