Hi list members Yeah thanks good work I smelled a rat I think after Kim
Komando didn't have it in her news of the day. Think I had heard of this web
site before. I'll make sure my contact knows about that. If the warning was
real, does anyone know if this person was caught or if the Hacker in question
is in the poky by now?
I pledge to participate actively in the efforts of the national federation

support the policies and programs of the federation; and abide by its

Hi,
before freaking out about this supposed current virus threat, it would be
informative to read the information about it at Snopes.com, which
investigates, explains and evaluates such warnings. This one originated in
the fall of 2006, and much about it is interesting to read. here's the URL
of the Snopes page about this virus warning. if the link takes up two lines
in your eamail, as it does in mine, first note where the line break is, then
copy and paste the entire URL into your browser's address bar, but then look
for the place where the line break was and make sure there's no space there
to break up the URL, by deleting a space if you find one.

Firefox has a control that stops flash video from showing automatically for
those who are photo sensitive. That might be the problem. Sorry don't know
how to override it but am putting out that suggestion so that someone else
may take a shot at it. Internet explorer also has this control. It is
there to prevent seizures.

I'd like to add to what Joel advises here. Usually you don't need to even
go to Snopes but only check for a couple of things to figure out if a warning
is real or not.
If a warning tells you to "send it to everyone you know," you should be
suspicious. Most reasonable people would trust you to know to whom you should
send such
a warning.
When generic terms like "this morning" without day or date are used, it
should strike you that this could have been written three years ago and would
still sound just
as urgent. There should be a specific date given.
If it mentions companies without any contact names, again be suspicious.
In this case, if it says "norton" instead of Symantec, the company that
produces it, that should be a pretty good sign that somebody is misleading you.
Finally, the important thing isn't who forwarded it to any of us, but
whether we can tell who wrote the original note. We have all forwarded things like
this when we
were starting out so the person who forwarded this to Ken is probably very
reliable. If you don't know the name of the person who wrote the original
note, though, be
suspicious. There is always some point where the forward list stops so you
can't tell who wrote the note and they never claim credit in the body of the
note. The
forwarder may be reliable, but the original author is into hiding and
thinking about the millions of copies of his or here warning are going all over the
world.
Definitely check with Snopes or something before forwarding warnings as Joel
suggests, but if any of the above are true, I don't even bother with that
any longer.
Best regards,
Steve Jacobson

I agree with everything Steve says, and I wouldn't have bothered with Snopes
myself because 1. he's right about the warning signals that something may
well be bogus and 2. because a warning almost identical to this one in its
wording got forwarded to a young middle school friend of mine who's
inexperienced in stuff like this, and she passed it on to me as well as to
other friends. So that time, instead of asking her to trust me about why the
warning was probably worthless, I checked it out myself at Snopes and then
sent her the Snopes URL so she could see for herself not only this specific
information but a resource to which she could turn when such things came to
her in the future. So now she's the virus hoax guru of her 7th grade class,
I guess. How cool is that.

Just to wrap up a bit.
1. Someone wrote that you'll never get the last one approved.
Referring to copyrights being based in part on equal access. I'm not so
sure, but it's worth using as a starting position.
2. someone wrote that this is an educational and industry gap, noting
that a book would help resolve it. This is partially true, but the
industry didn't know how to provide safe automobiles either until they
were forced to increase safety, and also gas mileage. Unless folks are
told that some things are not negotiable, they will be.
While accessibility is a culture change, the gain must be greater than
the pain, and sometimes government has to impose the pain to achieve the
gain. Its not lack of education, its lack of interest. amazon.com is
just allowing their equipment to be transparent regarding copyrights so
I really don't have a problem with that--its the basis in copyrights law
that is the problem. The whole concept that the government should
extend force of law in protection of intellectual property for some who
don't also provide equal access seems ridiculous on the surface of it to
me. If people demanded that IT products produce accessible outputs the
IT industry would sit up and pay more notice.

FileDir version 3.6 is now available and a direct link to the file is
www.empowermentzone.com/dirsetup.exe. For those not familiar with FileDir it is a
very good file manager designed to work with screen readers. Here are the
changes in this version:
Version 3.6
March 3, 2009
The unzip commands are now broader, unarchive commands that work with almost
any archive format, including .rar, .tar, .gz, .bz2, .chm, .cab, and .wepm
(a Window-Eyes script package that is the same format as .cab). FileDir does
this with the free 7Zip utility behind the scenes, which is also available
independently at
http://7zip.com
Although any archive may be viewed or extracted, it is still the case that
only a zip archive may be created or modified.
The What command, invoked with a question mark, now says the number of items
in an archive or subfolder before saying their names. As before, the Output
Text command, Shift+O, converts other file formats to text. It now does
this with an updated conversion tool (GetText.exe).
Inquire Differences, Alt+Shift+I, is a new command for comparing files in
two folders. The current folder is considered the source. You are prompted
for a target folder. FileDir generates a report in structured text format and
prompts you for where to save it. The default name is Report.txt in the
current folder. The report contains three sections: common target files,
missing target files, and additional target files. The first section lists target
file names that also exist in the source folder, and indicates whether each
is newer, older, or current (a time stamp comparison), as well whether it is
larger, smaller, or equal (a size comparison). The second section lists file
names that are missing in the target folder. The third section lists
additional file names found in the target folder.
For maximum functionality of FileDir under Windows Vista, you may wish to
configure it to "run as administrator." One way of doing this is by modifying
the FileDir shortcut on the desktop. Press Alt+Enter to open its properties,
choose the Advanced button, and mark the checkbox to require administrative
priviledges. Otherwise, for example, the ability to view or change files
under the directory tree
C:\Program Files
will be considerably restricted.

EdSharp version 3.0 is now available and a direct link to the file is at
www.empowermentzone.com/edsetup.exe. For those people not familiar with
EdSharp it is a very powerful text editor designed to work with screen readers.
Here are the changes in this version:
Version 3.0
March 3, 2009
When saving text to a file, EdSharp now checks whether any character has a
Unicode number greater than 255, which means that more than one byte is needed
to represent it. If so, the file is saved with a UTF-8 encoding, the most
common form of Unicode for storing files on disk. Otherwise, the default
encoding of the computer is used, e.g., Latin 1.
Several enhancements are designed to increase the efficiency of managing
indentation with a screen reader. The need is motivated by coding in the Python
language. Although a friendly language in other ways, its "significant
white space requirement" is inherently challenging to nonvisual users.
Indentation is a recommended style in most programming languages, but in Python, it is
required for the code to run. Other languages, moreover, often have
utilities for automatically reformatting code according to common conventions. In
Python, a change in indentation denotes the end of a code block rather than a
keyword like EndIf, or a } symbol. Thus, when reading normally by line with
a screen reader, the structure of code is not indicated. Instead, one often
has to check the indentation to clarify logical understanding.
The EdSharp commands to find a matching right brace, left brace, or to check
brace balance have been reassigned from key combinations with the B key to
ones with bracket keys: Control+Shift+RightBracket,
Control+Shift+LeftBracket, and Alt+Shift+RightBracket, respectively. To eliminate key conflicts, the
EdSharp installer includes a checkbox to remove previous settings, which is
checked by default.
You can now press Control+B to go to the next code block, or Control+Shift+B
to go to the previous one. A block is defined as lines with the same or
greater indentation/nesting. Control+I and Control+Shift+I have a similar
purpose, but they move to the next or previous change in indentation, so they stop
at nested blocks. EdSharp skips blank or commented lines with these
commands.
Thus, Control+I will stop at a nested block, whereas Control+B will not,
since it continues past lines with greater indentation. For example, if the
cursor is inside a loop block, then Control+I will go to the line at the closing
of the loop where a lower level of indentation resumes. In Ruby, this would
be the line with the word "end". In Python, it would be the first line of
code following the loop, since the change in indentation, itself, indicates
the end of the loop.
The related query commands, Alt+B and Alt+I, help you understand code
groupings without moving the cursor. They are examples of a new EdSharp feature
where a key can have an alternate action if pressed twice in a row without
moving the cursor. Alt+B says the rest of the current block, beginning at the
current line. When toggled with a second press, it says the whole block,
including lines prior to the current one, if any. Alt+I says the indentation
level of the current line. When toggled, it reads the text of the preceding line
with less indentation, which is typically the statement that introduced the
current block, e.g., an if, for, or while statement. These commands are best
learned by experimenting with familiar code.
Use the Infer Indent command, Alt+RightBracket, to hear what indent unit the
current document seems to be using. EdSharp looks at the first line that
starts with a space or tab character. If this key is pressed again without
moving the cursor, that sequence of space or tab characters is configured as
EdSharp's IndentUnit setting. This makes it easy to use the same indentation
style as a file you have opened.
Other keys with alternate actions spell a message when pressed a second
time. These include Say Open Windows (Shift+F4), Selected Text (Shift+Space),
Chunk (Shift+Backspace), Path (Alt+P), and Clipboard (Alt+Apostrophe).

In addition, if you read the warning carefully, you will see certain
words that are run together, such as, "AOLhas." It seems that if this
were a real warning, then it would have been written like one, and not
have grammar/spelling errors in it such as the above.

An Inspiring Dream For the Blind
Posted: Monday, October 06, 2008 10:29 AM by Sarika Dani From Josh
Weiner,
TODAY producer
Imagine losing your vision - and finding a way to ski, sail, bike and
continue all your passions. It sounds impossible, right? Not if you're
Ed
Gallagher. I met Ed recently for our TODAY story. Inspiring is the word
sums
up this his outlook on life.
Ed grew up near a Michigan lake, and he jokes that he "sailed" out of
his
mother's womb. A building contractor by profession, Ed always embraced
the
outdoors his entire life. Sailing became an integral part of his
routine.
But in his late 40s, Ed was diagnosed with a degenerative eye disease.
His
vision began to fade slowly over several years, and he feared his
sailing
days were over. But Ed, 57, who now lives in San Francisco, came across
a
group called BAADS - The Bay Area Association of Disabled Sailors. The
club
is a comprised of folks who have all types of disabilities, but with the
help of one another and many able-bodied volunteers, organized regular
sailing ventures in the beautiful bay water.
Then Ed came up with an amazing idea he calls "Genoa Connections." Named
after his beloved guide dog, it's a seemingly simple, yet brilliantly
clever
remote guidance system. Ed mounts a web-camera to a strap around his
forehead, and the camera wirelessly transmits the live video over the
Internet using free software called Skype. Ed's friends take turns
acting as
his guide. Both wear microphones and earpieces, and talk back and forth
as
the guide tells Ed what he's "seeing." He's testing the barriers, and
regularly uses it to sail, but also tries shopping, cross country skiing
and
even biking in Golden Gate park.
Ed has started an organization where he hopes to refine and mass-produce
his
system, so other blind people all around the world can use it too.
Certainly
it's not going to replace the time-tested travel tools like a white cane
or
guide dog (which already enable the blind to get around independently).
But
Ed believes it can greatly augment the lives of the blind and vision
impaired through advancing technology.
His dream doesn't end there. Ideally, Ed says, homebound individuals,
through a government agency, like the Department of Rehabilitation,
would
serve as the guides. That way it's a win-win. And according to Ed, the
experience is just as rewarding for the guide as for the blind person.
When
our correspondent, Jenna Wolfe, told Ed he seems like someone who always
see
the glass-half-full, he paused. Then, grinning, he responded, "that's
what
my mother always said!" Watch video here.

To avoid traffic these alerts should be first sent to the list moderator.
Then, the moderator can only send on announcement to the list if he/she
wants to.

Hi,
before freaking out about this supposed current virus threat, it would be
informative to read the information about it at Snopes.com, which
investigates, explains and evaluates such warnings.

Hi Albert,
A Tyros keyboard is an electronic musical instrument. I've never seen
one personally though.

Well, a tyro means a beginner, or a newbie in our slang of the day. I never
heard of some product called a Tyro Keyboard. So maybe the person means's he
or she is new to typing, or new to computing? or maybe, without my knowing
it, an unusual keyboard that's supposed to be easier for beginners to learn
to use is on the market? Hope someone explains.
Hope has pero

Wel, on most of the other lists to which I'm subscribed, mass mailings of
any kind, including virus warnings, are simply forbidden. There's not even a
provision for bothering the mod with such things. They generally don't
deserve the dignification.

i am using a computer with jfw 9 and ms word 2002. i've noticed that when
typing, i letters i type are occasionally missing. in conjunction with that,
i've also use the down-arrow or up arrow key only to have to press it at least
twice before jfw would move to the line. is there a setting in word or jfw i
need to adjust. thanks.
