[gui-talk] Still getting (*very* slow downloads from NLS BARD catalogue

Since reasonable speeds can be achieved from other computers I doubt there's
anything that can be done about your problem in the short run.

catalogue

Dave,

thanks. I did just that, a few days ago, and a man named Neil wrote back and

said he believed me, but that maybe my download speed wouldn't be improved
unless the NLS were to create a mirror site on a server on the West Coast. I

asked if Freedom Scientific and other places I download files from many
times faster have mirror sites like this, but he didn't say. Didn't "speak
to that," as they like to say these days. He only said that the NLS didn't
have the funding to do something like that. I was as baffled as ever, but it

was all friendly.

I also spoke to one of the reader advisors at the Braille Institute Library
here, and he says that when he downloads a file from the BARD site using his

computer at work (which is just a couple of miles down the street from me),

he gets similarly slow speeds. But when he does the download from his home
computer, and he lives here in the city, too, so it's not as if he goes home

to Washington D.C. after work, he gets a much speedier download, more
normal.

So now we're both just shrugging our shoulders. I'll check with my ISP's
tech support staff, just to see if they can offer any helpful perspective,
But ultimately I think the download deal is just a slow dud for me and I'll
have to accept it with a sense of humor. After all, even if I have to wait
three hours for a book to download, it's free and my computer's not crippled

while the down in progress, so what the heck. Pretty strange, though.

You should report your findings to NLSDownload at loc.gov
